ABSTRACT

Broiler chicken eggs are one of the main and strategic foods for the people of Indonesia and contribute to regional and national inflation. Broiler egg production in Indonesia differs between regions. Areas with a surplus of eggs tend to have lower prices than areas with a deficit. This research is to measure the transmission of broiler egg prices between markets in surplus and deficit areas, using weekly price time series data for the period January 2018-December 2021. Areas of surplus broiler eggs, East Java Province (the highest broiler egg production in Indonesia) which become one of the main suppliers to the Province of East Nusa Tenggara as a deficit area. Using the Johannsen cointegration test it is found that there is no cointegration or there is no relationship between the surplus and deficit regions in the long term but not in the short term. Factors of marketing infrastructure, market information systems, and geographical conditions can be obstacles to the absence of cointegration. The VAR (Vector Auto-Regressive) Vector Error Correction model (VECM) test, found that price transmission occurred between surplus and deficit areas, meaning that between the two regions, there was market integration prior to Covid. The transmission has weakened, and due to the Covid situation, there have been restrictions on the movement of people and goods. The government and other market players need to study the response of the broiler egg market, in the short and long term so that market players can make the right policies.

ABSTRACT

Infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) is among the most impactful poultry pathogens, whose control, based on biosecurity and routine vaccination, is hampered by the existence of countless genetic variants sharing poor cross-protection. A retrospective study was conducted on IBV positive samples collected in Italian broiler farms from 2012 to 2019. In 2015, the adopted vaccination protocol shifted from a Mass and 793B-based vaccines to the administration of Mass and QX vaccines, allowing to study how changes in vaccination strategies may affect IBV epidemiology, control and diagnosis in the field. The most frequently detected lineages were QX (70.3%), 793B (15.8%) and Mass (11.9%). The relative frequencies of QX and 793B detections remained stable throughout the study, while Mass detections significantly increased after the vaccination change. Rather than to an actual growth of Mass population size, this finding may be attributable to different vaccine interactions, with Mass strains being more frequently concealed by 793B vaccines than by QX ones. Based on the obtained results, the two vaccination protocols appear to be similarly effective in fighting IB outbreaks, which in the last decade have been caused primarily by QX field strains in Italy. These results indicate that vaccination strategies may significantly affect IBV epidemiology and diagnosis, and should therefore be considered when choosing and interpreting diagnostic assays and planning control measures.

ABSTRACT

Context. Roots and leaves have potential as feed ingredients for poultry, but antinutritional factors (ANFs), high fibre and low energy may limit their efficient utilisation. There is need to improve processing methods and diet formulation for maximum utilisation of these readily available resources and reduce feed cost. Aim. To investigate the replacement of maize with cassava root, moringa leaf meal and vegetable oil blend in finisher broiler diets. Methods. In total, 160 male broiler chickens aged 30 days were weighed and allotted randomly to 20 deep litter pens containing eight birds of similar individual weight (1500 g +/- 16.11). Four broiler finisher iso-energetic and isonitrogenous diets were formulated for the experiment. Diet 1 was based on maize and in Diets 2, 3 and 4, 15%, 30% and 45% of maize was replaced respectively, by a concentrate of cassava root meal, moringa leaf meal and vegetable oil combination (CMOC). Each diet was given to five pens in a completely randomised design for a period of 12 days. Key results. There were no significant differences in the growth parameters of birds among treatments. Except for drumsticks of birds on the 30% CMOC diet, there were no significant effects of diet on carcass components or digestive organ weights (P > 0.05). Gizzard pH was higher in the control birds than in the test groups. Feed cost per kilogram of carcass weight was significantly (P < 0.05) lower with the dietary inclusion of CMOC. Conclusion. Replacing up to 30% of the maize with CMOC is beneficial and replacement up to 45% is not detrimental. However, the economic benefits of maize replacement with CMOC need to be re-evaluated with ingredient costings less affected by the present COVID-19 pandemic. Implications. Maximum utilisation of cassava root and moringa leaf meal in the diet will reduce cost and improve income of small-to medium-holder broiler producers.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this experiment was to increase poultry meat production by increasing the number of chickens reared in the same area and managing it by using medicinal herbs Salvia officinalis L and Lavandula angustifolia L. in the broiler chicken diet. 705 one-day-old chicks were randomly distributed into to7 treatments with three replicates for an area of two m2 floor system in each replicate for each treatment, during 35 days of the study. T0 negative control 75 chicks, 25 chicks for each replicate 12-13 chicks per m2 fed standard diet. T1 positive control (stocking density without supplementation)105 chicks, 35 each replicate chicks 17-18 per m2 fed standard diet. The same stocking density for T2, T3, T4, T5, and T6 have been given standard feed with supplemented herbals, salvia 0.7%, 0.9%, lavender0.7%, 0.9%, and mixed 0.7% respectively. Depending on the results, chickens reared in stress stocking density with supplementations led to higher improvement of body weight, meat production, body weight gain (BWG), feed conversion ratio(FCR g feed/g weight), production index PI, carcass weight (g) and dressing percentage, RBCs 106cells/mm3, lymphocyte%, of increasing activity of thyroid hormones T3, T4 (nmol/L) boost antibody titers of ND and IBV when compared with positive control. However, heterophil%, stress indicator H/L ratio, glucose mg/ dL and cholesterol mg/ dL significantly reduced. The results showed that adding sage and lavender plants to broiler feed is effective in improving productivity, immunity, and resistance characteristics in reducing the adverse effects of stress caused by increasing the intensity of broiler rearing in the same area.

ABSTRACT

Protecting livestock against diseases by enhancing its immunity is essential and required in poultry industry. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the possible immunoenhancing effects of Inosine-Acedoben-Dimepranol (IAD) in broiler chicks. A total of 150 chicks were used in the present study, divided into 6 groups (25 for each) and subjected to different treatments. It has been found that IAD significantly (P 0.05) increased total leukocytic count, with increased granulocyte (neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils), lymphocyte and monocyte counts compared to control chicks. IAD significantly (P 0.05) increased total protein as a result of increased globulins in plasma when compared with those of control. IAD has been found to significantly (P 0.05) increase immune response of IB vaccine in IAD + IB vaccine-treated groups compared to control measured by ELISA. IAD exhibited antiviral effect indicated by increased survival percent of chicks challenged with virulent IB virus with survival 100% in the groups received IAD large dose plus vaccine. Data of the present study may indicate that supplying chicks with IAD in drinking water is a good recommendation in poultry industry based on its immune enhancing properties.

ABSTRACT

In this study, avian coronavirus infectious bronchitis virus (IBV), infectious laryngotracheitis virus (ILTV), avian metapneumovirus (AMPV), and avian reovirus (ARV) were evaluated in broiler and layer flocks. For this purpose, tracheal swabs from 48 broiler and 45 layer flocks with respiratory signs were inoculated SPF embryonated chicken eggs for virus isolation. The viruses were identified by real-time PCR. Results showed that the most common virus in both broiler and layer farms was IBV with incidence rates of 58.33% and 46.67%, respectively. ILTV, AMPV, and ARV incidences in the samples were found to be 22.22%, 13.33%, and 4.44% in layer flocks while 2.08%, 8.33%, and 20.83% in broilers, respectively. The numbers of IBV+AMPV and IBV+ARV coinfections were 5 (11.11%) and 1 (2.22%) in layers, whereas, 1 (2.08%) and 5 (10.42%) broilers, respectively. In addition, 2 broiler flocks (4.17%) had triple infection with IBV, AMPV, and ARV. ILTV was detected always alone from the samples of layer and broiler flocks. Sequencing of S1 gene of selected IBV TR/L45 and TR/B42 isolates showed similarities with IS/1494/06 (HM131453) at the rates of 98.98% and 99.69%, respectively, while TR/L37, TR/L38, and TR/L39 isolates were identical to 4/91 (KF377577) vaccine strain at the rates of 99.01%, 99.01%, and 98.76%, respectively. Sequencing analysis of the ICP4 and TK genes of ILTV isolates revealed that they were all field strains with low virulence. The present data represent actual information on the genotypes of IBV and ILTV circulating in poultry flocks in Turkiye.

ABSTRACT

Poultry industry is dynamically developing worldwide, and the threat from infectious viral diseases also increases. One of them is an acute, highly contagious avian infectious bronchitis (IB), caused by infectious bronchitis virus (IBV), the coronavirus of the fowl. IBV is characterized by extensive variations in the surface spike protein gene. Those genetic variations lead to rapid changes in IBV serotypes that need to be constantly monitored to assess the epidemiological situation in the field. The aim of this article was to present current knowledge and recent epidemiology, based on IBV field strains circulation. Several serotypes can be simultaneously present in a region and as they cross-protect poorly, broiler chickens can be infected more than once within their short period of life. Careful, constant monitoring is necessary to respond fast in case of new genetic IBV variants development. Some of these strains have global range, while the prevalence of others is limited to some geographical areas. Thus, the understanding the IB epidemiology, virus spread and the occurrence of individual strains allows to use the optimal vaccination schedule to limit the disease and improve the poultry production. Finaily, a good recognition of the IB problem in Central and Eastern Europe on the example of Poland as the largest European poultry producer, can be a key factor in the quickest response to emerging new IBV variants. Some practical solutions may help to introduce the similar and effective procedures also in other regions of the world with high intensity of poultry production.

ABSTRACT

Proper control of infectious bronchitis, pursued through strict biosecurity and mass vaccination, is essential in intensive broiler production. Despite effective and routinely adopted, hatchery spray vaccination has been hypothesized to affect body temperature and wellbeing of day-old chicks. Recently, gel administration has been proposed as an alternative and proved feasible in experimental settings. In this study, IBV spray and gel vaccination were compared in field conditions. One hundred birds from the same hatch were vaccinated, half by spray and half by gel, with 793B and Mass vaccines. After vaccination, rectal temperature was measured and vaccine intake assessed. The two groups were raised for 35 days in separate pens, and swabs and blood samples were collected at multiple time points for lineage-specific molecular analyses and serology, respectively. Temperature was significantly lower in spray vaccinated chicks 10 minutes and an hour after administration. A similar trend in 793B titres was observed in both groups, while Mass-based vaccine was detected later but persisted longer in gel vaccinated chicks. No differences were observed in mean antibody titres. Compared to spray, gel administration appears equally effective and less impactful on body temperature, thus supporting its application for IBV vaccmatlon.

1. The role of the Harderian gland (HG), choanal cleft (CC) and turbinate in terms of IBV M41 viral load compared to the trachea, and immune (innate, cellular and mucosal) responses were studied in 21-day-old commercial broiler chickens.2. After virulent IBV M41 challenge, the antigen concentration detected either by quantitative RT-PCR or immunohistochemistry peaked at 2-3 days post challenge (dpc) in all tissues. Significant increases of lachrymal IBV-specific IgA and IgY levels were found at 4-5 dpc.3. Gene transcription showed a significant up-regulation of TLR3, MDA5, IL-6, IFN-α and IFN-ß, where patterns and magnitude fold-change of mRNA transcription were dependent on the gene and tissue type.4. The results demonstrated active IBV M41 replication in the HG, CC and turbinate, comparable to levels of replication found in the trachea. Data on immune-related genes in head-associated tissues provide further understanding on the immunobiology of IBV and offer opportunities to identify their use as quantitative biomarkers in pathogenicity and vaccination-challenge studies.

ABSTRACT

Broiler population is one of the most important segments of livestock due to its significant contribution in white meat production. Infectious disease outbreaks adversely influence the production potential and consequently cause economic losses. Epidemiological data regarding magnitude of these disease outbreaks is of fundamental importance for planning of a comprehensive control strategy. With retrospective design, this study was conducted from January 2013 through December 2017 in order to assess the disease burden on broilers reared in different open type poultry houses. Out of total 658 commercial farms with capacity of 4221800 broilers, across Chakwal, a representative sample of 70 farms with capacity of 448000 broilers was randomly selected for collection and analysis of disease data. Five years' data of these randomly selected farms revealed highest (44.64%) crude morbidity during monsoon season followed by 23.92%, 22.12% and 17.49% for winter, spring and post-monsoon seasons respectively. The highest (14.90%) prevalence was recorded for new castle disease followed by infectious bursal disease (11.79%), pullorum disease (11.17%), colibacillosis (8.71%), infectious bronchitis (7.87%), inclusion body hepatitis (7.79%), chronic respiratory disease (7.67%), necrotic enteritis (6.48%), coccidiosis (6.09%), mycotoxicosis (5.43%), fowl cholera (4.74%), infectious coryza (4.41%), fowl typhoid (4.22%), omphalitis (3.71%) and hydropericardium syndrome (0.05%). Maximum share in crude morbidity was contributed by bacterial diseases with highest proportional morbidity of 48.68% followed by viral (40.32%), parasitic (5.80%) and fungal (5.20%) diseases. This epidemiological data represents true picture of study population and is a valuable tool for planning of prevention strategy and research priorities.

ABSTRACT

An attempt was made to analyze the impact of seasonal changes, disease scare situations and festivals on the prices of broilers across India. Prices of broilers were collected for the period from 2017 to 2021 from the various secondary sources like Karnataka Poultry Farmers and Breeders Association (KPFBA), TS AP Broiler Co-Ordination Committee (TSAPBCC), Poultry Bazaar etc. The seasonal index analysis for the last 10 years data revealed that the average broiler prices had grown significantly from 2011 to 2014, later prices gradually declined in 2015 due to the outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (H5N1) in the month of February, 2015. Prices bounced back and increased from 2016 to 2019. Again there was decline of prices in the middle of January 2020 due to outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (H5N1) and Covid-19 pandemic. The prices of broilers have been recovering and gradually increasing since March, 2021 onwards. The consumption of chicken during winter season is high and this led to high prices in the market. Whereas the demand for chicken during hot climate months of March, April and May become slack in all the market centers of India resulting lowest price for chicken. Also, the increased demand on account of festivals viz., Christmas and New Year attributed to the rise in prices in the months of November and December.

Poultry enteritis is an important multifactorial disease. Avian coronavirus (ACV) is one of many viruses related to enteric diseases and infectious bronchitis. Aim of this study was to find out the occurrence of ACV in enteritis affected broiler, molecular detection, phylogenetic analysis of avian corona virus and to examine intestine and liver for gross and microscopic lesions. Dead poultry birds (N=604) affected with enteritis were examined for presence of ACV. Intestinal samples of four birds were pooled to make one biological sample enteric ACV as the causative agent of enteritis in commercial poultry sector in and around four major districts of Rajasthan by RT-PCR. Molecular characterization was carried out by partial gene sequencing. Liver and intestine were examined grossly during post-mortem and by histopathology. Out of 151 pooled samples tested 51 (35.10%) were found positive for ACV. Prevalence of enteric ACV was highest in Ajmer (45.94%) and lowest in Dungarpur (23.07%) districts. 0-1 weeks age chicken flocks were found more susceptible for enteric ACV with 33.80% prevalence. Comparison of ACV sequence of this study revealed nucleotide (nt) identities from 99.44% among themselves, 99.44% with ACV from abroad. The amino acid (aa) identities of ACV of this study among themselves and with abroad sequences was 47.06 to 100%. Further severe congestion in intestine and necrotic patches on liver were recorded. Histopathology showed severe villous atrophy, congestion and cystic glands in sub-mucosa in intestine and severe congestion and haemorrhages along with infiltration of inflammatory cells in liver parenchyma.

ABSTRACT

Infectious bronchitis (IB) is an important disease that causes severe economic loses in the poultry industry worldwide. Furthermore, the spread of new variants poses a challenge for diagnosis and control of the disease. This study investigated the situation of infectious bronchitis virus (IBV), specifically the Israel variant-2 (IS var-2) also known as GI-23 genotype, in Turkey. Between 2014 and 2019, 214 flocks vaccinated against H120 from Marmara, Western Black Sea, and Inner Anatolia were examined, with 127 (59.3%) flocks testing positive for IBV, of which 92 (72.4%) were positive for IS var-2. Of the latter samples, 60 were randomly selected and subjected to full S1 gene sequencing. The analysis indicated that the field strain in Turkey was located on the same branch as the GI-23 genotype, which is one of the most frequently observed wild-type cluster found in the Middle East. The DNA similarities between the GI-23 isolates from 2014 to 2019 were 99%. In conclusion, the IS var-2 genotype has been circulating in broiler flocks in Turkey. It is recommended that establishing the vaccine strategy it should be considered the current circulating strains for the prevention and control of the disease among poultry.

ABSTRACT

Avian infectious bronchitis (IB) is an acute and highly contagious disease of the upper-respiratory tract caused by the infectious bronchitis virus (IBV). The virus is a member of the Coronaviridae family and has numerous serotypes and strains. Rapid replication combined with high mutation rate and recombination are the main causes of the observed high diversity. Feed conversion and average daily gain are affected in broilers, and infection is often followed by secondary bacterial infections. In layers, IBV causes a reduction in egg production. Today, IB is one of the most economically important diseases in the poultry industry. Transcriptional profiles of trachea tissue of the infected group (IBV) were studied with control group to evaluate changes in transcriptome profile at the early stages of infection. After the challenge of SPF chickens with IBV IS-1494 like (GI-23), the trachea tissue was used for RNA extraction, and changes in the transcriptome were investigated by Illumina RNA-seq technique. Up-regulated and down-regulated differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the transcriptome of trachea were identified. Gene ontology category, KEGG pathway were analyzed to identify relationships among differentially expressed genes. In general, the numbers of up-regulated genes were higher than of down-regulated genes in experimental group. In the experimental group, a more severe immune response occurred;an important up-regulated genes in this group's was Toll-like receptor signaling pathway, apoptotic pathway, MAPK signaling pathway. Results of this study could provide a general overview of transcriptome changes in the trachea at the early stage of infection with avian infectious bronchitis (IBV) virus.

ABSTRACT

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the alterations in selected indicators of immune responses and oxidative stress of broilers fed with nano-manganese. One hundred-sixty 1-day-old broiler chicks were randomly assigned into four groups with three replicates. Birds were fed the same basal diet supplemented with nano-manganese oxide, as 0.00 (control group), 50.00, 100, or 150 mg kg-1 of diet. The birds were vaccinated against avian influenza (AI), Newcastle disease (ND), infectious bronchitis (IB) and infectious bursal disease (IBD) as the standard vaccination schedule. Blood sample was taken from the brachial vein of birds on 42th day. A significant decrease in antibody titer against sheep RBC was revealed in the nano-manganese 100 and 150 groups compared to the control group. In addition, the antibody titers against IB and ND were significantly lower in the all nano-manganese groups compared to the control group. No significant difference was observed for the antibody titer against AI and oxidative stress indices among the experimental groups. The findings in the present study suggested that nano-manganese at 50.00, 100 and 150 mg kg-1 levels might suppress humoral immune response in broilers which should be taken into consideration in supplementation.

Avian orthoavulavirus, commonly known as Newcastle disease virus (NDV) has been a constant threat for the poultry industry of Iran for decades. Recently, a couple of preliminary studies on backyard and commercial chicken suggested that a major subgenotype circulating in Iran may be VII(L) subgenotype, which is now known as VII.1.1 according to the new classification system. The unique subgenotype was not reported from other parts of the world and was slightly (=3%) different from the closest group that was VIId. The study was conducted between July 2018 and March 2019 to determine the exact NDV genotypes/subgenotypes circulating in Iranian broiler poultry farms;fivehundred and forty chickens were sampled from thirty-six broiler farms located in eighteen provinces of Iran. As other genotypes/subgenotypes such as XIII and VI.2 are circulating in neighbouring countries, border provinces were also sampled. The F gene of the NDV isolates was sequenced and phylogenetic analysis was conducted. All the isolates clustered under the VII.1.1 group. The evolutionary analysis also revealed that the distances were between 0.0 and 0.7% meaning that the Iranian NDV circulating in broiler farms were not only of VII.1.1 sub-genotype, but also genetically very identical, indicating that the routine control measures for ND in Iran were not able to prevent the circulating NDVs. Although stricter biosecurity measures have been really effective in developed countries, surveillance of NDV to determine the circulating genotypes might also help us to implement better vaccination strategies in the future. Since the emergence of low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) H9N2 viruses in Morocco in 2016, severe respiratory problems have been encountered in the field. Infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) is often detected together with H9N2, suggesting disease exacerbation in cases of co-infections. This hypothesis was therefore tested and confirmed in laboratory conditions using specific-pathogen-free chickens. Most common field vaccine programmes were then tested to compare their efficacies against these two co-infecting agents. IBV γCoV/chicken/Morocco/I38/2014 (Mor-IT02) and LPAI virus A/chicken/Morocco/SF1/2016 (Mor-H9N2) were thus inoculated to commercial chickens. We showed that vaccination with two heterologous IBV vaccines (H120 at day one and 4/91 at day 14 of age) reduced the severity of clinical signs as well as macroscopic lesions after simultaneous experimental challenge.
